The course follows a human-centric framework for understanding and shaping smart cities, comprising technological, social, cultural, ecological, economic and political aspects. Urban networks related to human activity as well to transport, energy and information are part of the content.
The course provides a wide, multidisciplinary foundation for the planning and design, engineering and technology, management and governance of urban systems in a smart city. The complexity of natural, built and social environments in urban context is emphasized and different approaches based on a variety of sciences and methodologies are used. 
During the course students will meet experts, and work in cooperation with professionals in the field.
The course includes lectures and working in multidisciplinary teams.
The students will produce a joint outcome at the end of the course (an urban development project).
